Advising and Support
The Office of Student Life and Alumni Relations (SLAR) provides enrolled students with academic counseling and advice about matters relating to their lives as students in the School and at the University. The Student Life staff provides students with referrals to other offices, both on and off campus, as necessary. But nothing substitutes for face-to-face meetings with an advisor. We encourage you to come into the Office of Student Life and Alumni Relations whenever you have questions or concerns. Our goal is to ensure your experience be as rewarding as possible.

Student Services Online (SSOL)
Student Services Online (SSOL) provides students with access to their student account. Through SSOL students can view their academic profile, register for classes, view their term bill, view grades, view holds, and order transcripts. Students may also update their personal contact information and emergency contact information.
Students may access SSOL at https://ssol.columbia.edu/ and log in using their UNI and password.
Smarthinking Online Tutoring
Smarthinking provides online one-to-one academic support up to 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Students can participate in drop-in tutoring, scheduled tutoring, or off-line tutoring in a variety of subject areas. Smarthinking also has an online Writing lab which can assist students across academic disciplines.
Students can access Smarthinking by logging in and entering your username, which is your Columbia e-mail address and entering the “Lions1754” as the password. After you log in for the first time, you should change your password.

The Writing Center provides writing support to the entire Columbia community. In one-on-one consultations and workshops, our consultants offer feedback and strategies to help you improve at every stage of your writing, from brainstorming to final drafts.
The Libraries provide gathering places to pursue scholarly research, to learn about and use information technology, to write, to study, and to draw on our rich collection of print and electronic resources. At your disposal is a fully integrated research library. The CourseWorks learning management system provides state-of-the-art online learning and information sharing tools, while creating a highly interactive educational experience. This robust system offers user-friendly information sharing between instructors and students through collaboration tools, such as email, chat and wiki, discussion boards, quizzing, an improved gradebook and social media.

The Canvas learning management system provides state-of-the-art online learning and information sharing tools, while creating a highly immersive and interactive educational experience. Canvas puts the user front and center and makes it easy for instructors and students to connect in a user-friendly, intuitive environment. Its ease of use allows users to access and manage course materials quickly and efficiently.
Users can configure notifications to receive updates regarding feedback, grading alerts, due date changes etc. via email, text or social media services. The built in collaboration and multimedia tools allow for powerful integrations and provides the ability to easily create and deliver rich content. Furthermore, it was built for the mobile generation, and therefore runs wonderfully well on all modern mobile web browsers, and also have native applications for iOS and Android devices available for free.
