Examinations and Grades

Course examinations are usually held on the last day of classes. Students should consult their school bulletin for a complete list of grades.

Pass/Fail: Columbia and Barnard students should speak with their advisor or class dean before exercising the Pass/Fail option. Core courses cannot be taken Pass/Fail and most departments will not accept a course with a grade of P toward the major. It is the responsibility of the student to determine if a course taken Pass/Fail can count toward graduation. Please consult the Summer Term calendar for the last day to change to Pass/Fail or to change back to a letter grade. Students who wish to change the grading option for a course should submit a completed Add/Drop & Registration form to 303 Lewisohn Hall (GS students should submit their form to 403 Lewisohn).

R (Registered for the course; no qualitative grade assigned): Columbia students are not eligible to take any summer courses for R credit.

INC (Incomplete): Students who wish to apply for an Incomplete must submit a petition in writing with the appropriate supporting documentation to either 303 Lewisohn (for students in CC, SEAS, and BC) or 403 Lewisohn (for students in GS). The petition must be submitted in advance of the final exam or date that the final project is due. No petition will be accepted after the date a final assignment is due or the date of the final exam. If the petition to receive an INC is approved, the student will be informed of the deadline by which all work must be completed and to whom the work must be submitted. Students can apply for an Incomplete in the case of an incapacitating illness, as certified by University Health Services or a private physician, serious family emergency or circumstances of comparable gravity that prevent them from completing the final assignment or taking the final exam.
