Special Regulations for the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences

Except for graduate students who have been admitted only for the M.A. degree, students registered in GSAS may not earn Residence Unit credit during the summer. However, when the graduate student's department certifies to the GSAS Financial Aid Office that the summer course is necessary for the M.Phil./Ph.D. degree, the tuition paid for the summer course may be deducted from the cost of the Residence Unit or Extended Residence in the immediately following fall semester. Please contact GSAS Financial Aid for conditions and restrictions related to summer tuition coverage.

Graduate students who wish to apply for this deduction should obtain an application from:

GSAS Financial Aid Office
107 Low Library

No deduction may be made from fall semester tuition charges of Half Residence Unit, Extended Residence, or Matriculation and Facilities.

Graduate Students in M.A. Programs

Students who have been admitted to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to pursue an M.A. degree only, and who (with the approval of their departments) are taking summer courses that satisfy M.A. degree requirements, will be charged a Quarter or Half Residence Unit or Extended Residence during the Summer Term.

If such graduate students take courses that are not required for the M.A. degree, they must pay the normal per-point tuition; the course will not count toward the Residence Unit obligation.
