Cross-Registration

There are two types of cross-registration:

  1. Cross-registration of Continuing Education students into courses offered by other divisions at the University
  2. Cross-registration of students at other institutions with which Columbia has a formal agreement

Permission to register for courses in other divisions of the university depends on the course, the school that offers it, and the student’s academic status within the School of Continuing Education. Some schools allow cross-registration; others do not. Below is specific cross-registration information for each school.

Cross-Registration in Other Schools in the Arts and Sciences

School of the Arts

Office of Student Affairs: 305 Dodge Hall; 212-854-3343

Undergraduate courses in film, theatre, writing, and visual arts are available to Continuing Education students on a space-available basis. Although not permitted to enroll in M.F.A. writing courses, Postbaccalaureate Studies students in Continuing Education may cross-register in selected graduate courses in the other divisions of the School of the Arts on a space-available basis, with the permission of both the Dean of the School of Continuing Education and the appropriate division of the School of the Arts.

Columbia College

Admissions Office: 212 Hamilton Hall; 212-854-2522

Continuing Education students may cross-register in Columbia College courses on a space-available basis. The only exceptions are the two-term sequences in Contemporary Civilization and Literature Humanities—these courses are only available to Columbia College degree candidates. Permission to cross-register in Columbia College courses must be obtained from the Dean of the School of Continuing Education.

School of General Studies

Admissions Office: 408 Lewisohn Hall; 212-854-2772;
gs-admit@columbia.edu

Because General Studies students take the same Arts and Sciences courses Continuing Education students do, the question of cross-registering for courses in General Studies does not arise.

General Studies may accept up to 15 points of credit taken as a Continuing Education student toward the bachelor’s degree.

Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Admissions Office: 107 Low Memorial Library; 212-854-4737
Financial Adviser: 107 Low Memorial Library; 212-854-3808

Continuing Education students with appropriate preparation and departmental and/or instructor permission may cross-register for courses offered by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.

Graduate courses taken through the School of Continuing Education may become the basis of transfer credit toward a graduate degree, although this is up to the graduate school to which a student is admitted. Columbia’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences normally confers up to 12 points of credit toward the Liberal Studies M.A., and up to one “residence unit” of credit toward the M.A. for work completed in the School of Continuing Education as a Postbaccalaureate Studies student in approved graduate-level courses with a grade of B or better.

School of International and Public Affairs

Admissions Office: 408 IAB; 212-854-6216
Assistant Dean for Registration: Caroline Kay, 1433 IAB; 212-854-8690;
cck11@columbia.edu

Postbaccalaureate Studies students, with appropriate preparation and the permission of both Continuing Education and SIPA, may enroll in International and Public Affairs courses, on a space-available basis. Complete information about the cross-registration procedure can be found at http://sipa.columbia.edu/academics/sipa_registration/nonsipa_instructions.html. Well in advance of registration, Postbaccalaureate Studies students in the School of Continuing Education should consult the Web site for course application requirements. To register for SIPA courses, Continuing Education students must secure approval in the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs, 203 Lewisohn, before going to the SIPA registration site in the Stetler Lounge on the 6th floor of the International Affairs Building during the first and second week of classes to register. SIPA courses must be registered for in person.

Courses taken through the School of Continuing Education may become the basis for advanced standing toward a graduate degree in SIPA or elsewhere, but this is up to the graduate school to which a student is admitted.

Schools and Divisions Outside the Arts and Sciences

Barnard College

Admissions Office: 111 Milbank Hall; 212-854-2014;
admissions@barnard.edu;
www.barnard.edu
Dean of Admissions: 111 Milbank Hall; 212-854-2014

Barnard courses appear in departmental course listings with the prefix “BC” before the course number. Limited-enrollment courses at Barnard, especially seminars, are only open to Continuing Education students on a space-available basis and with instructor’s approval. While it is generally possible to cross-register in Barnard courses without limited enrollments, Continuing Education students should be aware that, in some departments, courses at Barnard are not interchangeable with what appear to be equivalent Columbia courses.

School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation

Office of the Dean: 402 Avery; 212-854-3473

Postbaccalaureate Studies students may, with the permission of the Office of the Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation, enroll in non-studio graduate courses in architecture if they have adequate preparation. This means that some graduate courses in the fields of architectural history, planning, and preservation are open to qualified postgraduates. No design courses are open to Continuing Education students.

Postbaccalaureate Studies students may enroll on a space-available basis in undergraduate-level studio courses in graphics and architecture offered as part of the Barnard-Columbia major in architecture. Postbaccalaureate Studies students seeking course approval should first secure the permission of an adviser in the Office of Admissions and Students Affairs, 203 Lewisohn, and then consult one of the major advisers: Professor Karen Fairbanks, 304 Barnard Hall, or Professor Joeb Moore, 307 Barnard Hall.

The Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science

Associate Dean for Academic Planning: 403 Lerner Hall; 212-854-2446
Undergraduate Admissions Office: 212 Hamilton Hall; 212-854-2522;
ugrad-seasquestion@columbia.edu
Office of Graduate Student Services: Admission, Financial Aid, and Student Affairs: 524 S. W. Mudd; 212-854-6438;
seasgradmit@columbia.edu

Continuing Education students with adequate preparation may enroll in engineering courses as long as any required instructor’s permission has been granted.

Graduate School of Journalism

Postbaccalaureate Studies students may, with the permission of the Dean of the School of Journalism, enroll in a very limited number of journalism courses on a space-available basis.

Postbaccalaureate Studies students may, with the permission of the Dean of Student Affairs in the Mailman School of Public Health and of the instructor, enroll in some Public Health courses.

Courses taken through the School of Continuing Education cannot subsequently be transferred to a degree program at the Mailman School of Public Health.

School of Social Work

Student Services Office: 1255 Amsterdam Avenue; Room 525, 212-851-2364

Postbaccalaureate Studies students with the necessary prerequisites may, with the permission of the Student Service Office at the School of Social Work, enroll in Social Work courses on a space-available basis.

Teachers College

Admissions Office: 146 Horace Mann; 212-678-3710;
tcinfo@tc.columbia.edu

Teachers College is the graduate professional school of education affiliated with Columbia University. Postbaccalaureate Studies students in the School of Continuing Education may be given permission to cross-register in Teachers College courses only by the Dean of the School of Continuing Education and only if they are also registering for arts and sciences courses in the School of Continuing Education.

Postbaccalaureate Studies students wishing to register for Teachers College courses only should seek direct admission to Teachers College.

Schools Not Granting Access to Continuing Education Students

Continuing Education students are not normally allowed to cross-register in courses in the schools listed below:

Graduate School of Business
School of Law
College of Dental Medicine
School of Nursing
College of Physicians and Surgeons

Cross-Registration with Other Institutions

Students at institutions with which Columbia has formal cross-enrollment arrangements—e.g., the Juilliard School and Union Theological Seminary—need not apply for admission to the School of Continuing Education. These students must, however, secure written permission for cross-enrollment from their home school registrar and present it to an adviser in the Office of Student and Alumni Affairs during registration.

Note: Union Theological Seminary students may only register for graduate-level (4000 and above) Arts and Sciences courses with R, U, G, or W prefixes.
