Testimonials
"Finally, a real strategic-based communications program leading to a master's degree. Columbia University is doing it right--combining strong academic research and proven communications strategic thinking with expertise from outside the classroom. Students are exposed to the diversity, the pressure, the ups-and-downs of the communications field, better preparing them for a rich career in one of the most dynamic and exciting industries. The timing for this program couldn't be better--we need skilled, ethical, experienced, and strategic thinkers in our field more than ever to address the public's justifiable worry about the viability and integrity of businesses and their leaders."
"The more students learn about the business of public relations, the more they will find out what a creative and intellectually stimulating communications discipline it is. This program teaches the 'why' behind the 'what'--something that’s important to potential employers."
"This is a much-needed program for the public relations professional and the organizations we serve. We need to balance the important communications skills our profession demands with strategy--what is the business problem we need to address, what are the insights that come from our research, and what are the best strategies for effective communications?"
"The industry is full of ambitious, talented young people who often lack the ability to formulate successful communications strategies. We welcome Columbia's rigorous program with its cadre of experienced industry professionals teaching students how to become strategic thinkers."
"Columbia University's Strategic Communications Program addresses one of today's greatest needs: educating, training and developing strategic thinkers who have the knowledge and insights to create communications programs that solve problems and bring about a desired result. It makes rich use of resources available only in New York and provides a credential that is truly unique."
"Columbia University's prestige in academia adds significant status to their new Strategic Communications program. This program is an important source of talent in the competitive convergent marketplace by teaching students how to effectively create integrated strategy for clients."
"The course was very well organized and had a good, informative mix of in-class exercises, readings, case studies, speakers, and assignments."
"The course was very well organized. It was exciting, and I learned a lot even though I have more than seven years of experience in political communications. Stephen Sigmund is one of the best instructors of this program. He is extremely knowledgeable, creative motivating, and a great mentor."
"Jane Praeger is an incredible instructor. I have become a more engaging writer because of this course. Jane teaches you how to make the reader connect to your text in a deep and meaningful way through the use of specific word choice and imagery. She inspired me to develop my writing ability and to feel passionate about the entire learning process."
"Paul Argenti is a master educator. At first you fear whether you can meet his expectations, but over the semester he inspires greatness from his students."
"The course encouraged me to analyze situations and think strategically. Course lectures and presentations were always very engaging and enjoyable. I liked the open class atmosphere I learned a lot from my peers. "
"This is one of those courses where you keep the models used in a file near your desk at work. They offer a useful and practical methodology for breaking down complex problems."
"I appreciated the professor's approach to the work--her passion for the subject matter made complicated material easy to comprehend. This was one of the best classes I've had in this program. I truly appreciated the combination of structure and interaction."
"This was a great class with a very congenial atmosphere that was conducive to learning. The course tied together a lot of different trends that I had been observing outside the classroom. I hadn't really reached the conclusion that they were part of an over-arching shift in the way society is adjusting to digital communications. The course helped me connect the dots in an meaningful way."
"This course highlighted a very appealing side of market research."
"I highly recommend this course for all who work in nonprofit administration--not just in the communications field. This course exceeded my expectations and I found each class to be inspiring engaging. The time just flew by in each class period. Thought-provoking assignments."
"Well worth the tuition. Kate Permut has put together a well thought out, challenging course. The final project for the New York Transit Museum was the highlight and most challenging part of the course but also the part in which I learned the most. "
"Jane Praeger is very enthusiastic about the course and learing. She is open to discussions on both sides of issues and does a great job of relating class examples to the business setting. "
"David Grossman was a phenomenal instructor. He knew his material in and out and had a great presentation style. He was very engaging and motivating--critical to what we were learning. He also was very thorough in each assignment, having us look at each assignment from every perspective--doing our own work, critiquing our own work, critiquing others work, etc. "
"Steve Jarmon was very organized and conveyed information clearly throughout the class. He returned assignments promptly with plenty of feedback to help with future assignments. It was also great to hear examples from Steve's past experience with Snapple, Timberland, 1-800-Flowers, and other companies."
"Edith Updike's class was unequivocally one of the best courses that I have ever taken. It helped me land my dream job at Conde Nast. I closed the deal with letters that were attention-grabbing, compelling, and showcased my sense of humor--a formula that I crafted under Edith's tutelage. Her critiques are bountiful professional and well thought out, and if you follow her advice you will most assuredly be a better writer. This course gave me the nuts-and-bolts grammar kick in the pants that I needed I learned to jettison passive sentence constructions, zero-in on split infinitives, and rid my sentences of laborious extra-wordiness. Beyond that we were trained to think strategically by viewing the world through a journalist's critical lens. Effective strategies rely on orientation and animation. By writing and rewriting and rewriting again you are also training your mind to think clearly, logically, and efficiently, a skill that will undoubtedly serve students well in their personal and professional lives. "
"Jim Eiche is extremely organized and knows the material inside and out. I do not deal with global communications much in my current job, so I really appreciated this class. It was fascinating to learn about organizing people and processes on a global scale. A great course overall. "
"Completing the ACP was the perfect ending to my academic work at Columbia. Everything that I had learned in the program found its way in some manner into the final product. That was actually the challenging part of the project--it required me to extract the essence of my prior academic work and use it in a relevant way. Having Jane Praeger and Louise Whittet as my advisers made the exercise all the more satisfying. The impact of their expertise ability to communicate concepts and dedication to making our learning experience rewarding cannot be understated. I have the benefit of having completed a master's thesis previously and I have to say that our program's layout for the final course was infinitely better than my previous experience. I have found the Strategic Communications program to be not only academically rewarding but also personally satisfying."
"Working with the Media provides the tools needed to effectively craft one's writing in order to get it published. Because I took this class, I was immediately successfully in pitching a story angle to my local newspaper and getting my Op-Ed published on an issue that I am passionate about. This class taught me how to select newsworthy topics and pitch to the right editorial staff member in a manner that is relevant to their publication. My piece on the childhood obesity epidemic ran at the top of the page, above all the other Op-Ed writers. "
"This is by far one of the best courses I've taken in the program. Tasha Space's lectures are directly applicable to my daily work. Tasha has taught me how to think strategically, how to evaluate a positioning strategy, and how to create ideas that have true relevance with consumers. "
"Betty Sugarman was fantastic. She is a very fast thinker, and the exercises she made us do in class were very insightful. I organized my notes from her class and have put them on my desk at work as a reference. "
"Peter Hirsch brought in a guest to present and analyze the Duke rape case from a crisis communications perspective. It was the best class I have had to date in the program. Together we deconstructed the case looking at how each major player reacted to the crisis, related to the media, and how the media shaped the story. In the course of our discussions, Peter would take the opportunity to teach us strategy. What were the implications of this person's statement or action? What if they had done this instead of that--would the media have reacted differently? We were forced to look at things from different angles, even the not-politically-correct angle. Here, Peter's leadership was superb. He helped the class see beyond the hot-button issues of race and class and look at the strategy! This activity-based approach is the best way to teach strategy and strategic thinking."
"The professor was especially good at designing each three-hour class to maximize learning by varying the agenda and gathering feedback. Also, this class offered the best all-around speakers series--very diversified in their relationship to Evaluation and Measurement."
"Stephen Sigmund is very knowledgeable, energetic, organized, and relays the information clearly to us. He encourages discussions, questions, and always knows exactly how to explain things that will make you understand and be even more interested in the subject."
"This is a great course and I feel lucky to have taken it. I learned so much about the power strong opinion has to persuade. I learned how to poke holes in my thinking in order to make my arguments stronger, and, as a result, my writing has already improved dramatically. I learned the different skills involved in media interviews and speech writing, two areas I knew nothing of. The best thing about this course is that you practice your strategic thinking, because just as with any communication campaign, when you're writing an op-ed or doing a three-minute media interview you have to know who you're talking to, what you want them to do, and how you want them to do it before you even begin. It's hard but very rewarding."
"Being able to study with Professor Argenti is a great experience. He is incredibly fair and challenged each student to be his or her best in every session. "
"I enjoyed Shawn McIntosh's class very much. There were many assignments, but I felt they were manageable and enhanced my learning. Shawn's standards are high but I was glad for that--it definitely challenged my thinking and, as a result, this class has already helped me professionally in my day-to-day work environment. I also thought Shawn ran the class really well--he supported class dialogue, provided some great insights of his own, was fair with grading, and in general was very encouraging to the entire class about the important role communicators have in society today."
"The lectures were dynamic and chock full of real-world examples, which greatly enhanced not only my learning but also my retention. The professor conveys information in a clear, concise manner, and the flow of the class lectures made logical sense."
"This class is exactly what a graduate experience at Columbia should be. Rigorous, challenging, a clear learning value. I’ve come away knowing and appreciating far more about market research than I expected. Truly exceptional teaching."
"The course was great because it concentrated on two primary projects that you were able to really focus on and fully develop. The final project for the New York Transit Museum provided a great problem-solving opportunity for the class, and we had plenty of resources at our disposal. "
"Edith Updike is a talented and amazing writer and editor. In class she communicated the topics well and exceeded what one expects in terms of knowledge from a Columbia professor."
"Overall, I have learned a tremendous amount in this program. The instructors have given me invaluable lessons so that I can be a better businessperson, communicator, writer, and strategist."
"I wanted to let you know that the Positioning and Communications Strategy class I took this summer helped me while interviewing for a job. They put me on the spot with lots of questions for which I had to think strategically, and your breakdown of the principals of communications strategy really informed my thinking. After two interviews I got a job as account director. "
"I thoroughly enjoyed the class. The workload was intense but manageable. The course materials were relevant, and I could immediately relate in-class learning with my profession. In-class discussion and case studies were most beneficial learning tools to demonstrate real-world applications."
"When I watch an interview on TV or read an op-ed I am keenly aware of how people choose to express themselves. This class has helped me develop a more critical eye and it has already helped me in my work. I am also far more impressed by people who are great communicators because I realize how difficult it truly is."
"At the risk of using up my entire quota of superlatives for the month in this one course evaluation, Professor Argenti is a gifted teacher with an unmatched intelligence and enthusiasm for the material."
"This course helped demystify some of the concepts of measurement and made me a lot more confident in my ability to design a measurement plan. It also highlighted the importance of measurement, something that can never be reinforced enough. I thought that I was really never going to be good with numbers and measurement, but this course showed me that anyone can do it; you just have to use logic and some common sense. I felt that I went from strength to strength throughout the course of the semester."
"The small class size and workshop format of this course worked very well. The combination of feedback from Jane Praeger and my classmates was invaluable. Jane created a very constructive environment in which we could learn and practice our persuasive writing and speaking techniques. I felt both nurtured encouraged and challenged. And although being videotaped terrified me, I'm grateful for the experience and learned a lot from it. I also appreciated the opportunity to delve into a topic of my choice for the entire semester and to be exposed to the wide variety of topics chosen by my peers. "
"I thought all of the speakers had very valuable information. They gave the course pertinent meaning in the real world and showed us how the theories we were learning could be applied."
"Because the classroom environment fostered such great debate, I learned a lot from my classmates and wanted to hear what they had to say. It was a great, challenging, exciting class. A great balance between communications and management."
"Columbia's Strategic Communications program cuts to the core challenge clients face today: how to differentiate and evolve in a complex marketplace with increased competitive challenges and audience indifference. In the real-world learning environment students appreciate client needs and, with exposure to a broad communications arsenal, can manage communications strategically to achieve the organization's business goals."
"As the first Ivy League university to offer an advanced degree in Strategic Communications, Columbia is uniquely positioned to give students both a superior academic experience and access to the City's smartest and most accomplished communications professionals. Beyond that, students are connected to the vast network of agencies and firms practicing in New York City, the center of the communications world."
"Now that I'm removed a little bit from the intensity of the thesis, I really see how at each step we were pushed to develop our ideas further and further. That's what made the project so difficult but also so interesting. Because we were able to choose our own company and really invest in every angle of thinking and tackling the problem, it was especially rewarding."
"I was very impressed by the way that the Columbia students delved into this project, particularly in terms of their energy, the detailed research done by each team, and the understanding they gained about what factors drive the complex New York commercial real estate market. Their insights led to grounded strategies and creative communications programs which can help the Empire State Building achieve its business goals."
"Our motivated and professionally committed student body makes for a very dynamic learning environment. Since most students are working in specific communications roles and bring work-related issues and experience into the classroom, discussions are highly relevant and intellectually stimulating for students and faculty alike. "
"The course provided concrete techniques for hashing out positioning and communications strategy that can be taken directly into the workplace. Jim Eiche's ability to translate his wealth of experience into a classroom setting was invaluable. "
"Never, not in a million years, did I think that I would be given the opportunity to 'brand' UN Peacekeeping. I went through four interviews and a three-hour exam. I beat 40 candidates with peacekeeping experience. Currently, I am battling a positioning statement through the executive office, developing a role/objective for communication, and administering qualitative research, while identifying UN Peacekeepers who have a compelling story to tell. I am implementing everything I learned from my Columbia University education into my daily tasks.... I would not be sitting where I am today if it were not for your support."
"I chose to pursue the M.S. in Strategic Communications instead of an M.B.A. because I realized that I was more interested in the creative side of the business world than the quantitative side. The program has expanded my understanding of how pivotal great communications can be for any business."
"Communications in the Digital Age was one of the most useful, informative, and interesting courses on the program. Tom Groppe and Shawn McIntosh were both terrific instructors. They patiently explained complicated material and made it understandable, memorable, and applicable to the real world. We were given enough flexibility to choose blog topics and final projects. Because I had to write three blog entries a week, I kept abreast of all technology news as it pertained to public relations and television, and ended up learning a lot about the tech world. For our final project, our group chose to work with WiFi Salon, a small company that provides free wireless services to New York City parks. This was one of the most hands-on projects we did at Columbia. Our group created wire frames for the Web site (which were accepted by the Parks Commissioner), press kits, attended meetings with client's sponsors, and provided strategic consulting throughout the entire semester. As a result, I retained WiFi Salon as a client and continued providing consulting services to them throughout the summer. In the end, my partnership with WiFi Salon and the knowledge and skills I obtained in the course led to an exciting job opportunity. I strongly believe that the course is essential to all communications professionals in this program. My advice to all students would be to take this course. Communications strategy without Web integration is essentially useless at this day and age. Knowing everything from Web analytics to social networks, blogs, and search engine optimization is a must for all who want to become successful communications professionals. "
"Thank you so much for thinking of the Transit Museum for your class project. I was totally impressed with how thorough each group's work was and how they stuck closely to the parameters of our reality in formulating their plans. I am looking forward to...putting some of these great ideas into action. "
"I found the seminar beneficial because it helped me to confirm assumptions I was having about the industry. I really liked the variety of speakers because they all seemed to have a different take on their business and organizational message. "
"This is one of the best seminars I've been to. I was wondering about media planning as a career option, but now I know I'd much rather be on the strategy side. So it was very helpful in that regard, but also very helpful in that regard, but also because I have a much better grasp of what media planning involves and how it plays out in the real world. The presenters were all articulate and they seemed to love their jobs, which is always inspiring."
"I obtained a high-level communications position that was the result of networking opportunities created by Columbia's strategic communications program. The experience and practical knowledge I gained through Columbia's Strategic Communications program enabled me to obtain a position for which I would not otherwise have been qualified. "
