Seminars
Current Seminars
Seminars and workshops are designed to provide students with opportunities to enhance and expand their exposure to the field, to learn about diverse job options and to improve specific skills necessary to succeed in the program and in their careers.
Degree candidates are invited to attend seminars during the fall and spring semesters. Seminars and workshops are offered on campus on select Friday evenings or Saturdays, or include morning visits to New York City firms.
Unless otherwise noted, sessions held on the Columbia campus are open to the public.
Seminars are divided into three categories:
- Working At...
An opportunity for students to get “behind the scenes” insight into working at a particular firm and/or in a particular field. - What’s New?
These events examine current trends, issues, and controversies in the communications field. - How-to Workshops

Event Description
For years, businesses have invested in marketing and built their brands strategically- while nonprofits have been wary of the 'b' word. Increasingly, nonprofits are leveraging communications best practices such as Positioning and Personality to increase visibility and raise money- particularly during lean times. This workshop will explore how nonprofits leverage best practices from the for-profit marketing world to build relationships with key audiences. Participants are encouraged to bring their examples of their nonprofit's communications materials for discussion.
Sarah Durham is the principal and founder of Big Duck, a communications firm she founded in 1994 that works exclusively with nonprofits. She's also the author of the upcoming book, 'Brandraising: How Nonprofits Raise Money and Increase Visibility Through Smart Communications".
The event is open to the public, but RSVP is required.
