Time Commitment

The part-time graduate program is demanding and requires a significant commitment of time and energy. Students are expected to complete the program in five consecutive terms of part-time study, including the summer.

Classes meet throughout the week primarily from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Studio classes and site visits are frequently scheduled on Saturdays. Students are expected to spend a considerable amount of time outside of classroom instruction in the studio.

In the first term, students enroll in two courses: Landscape K4200 History and Theory of Gardening and Landscape Design and Landscape K4210 Graphics and Landform Modeling. Each course meets once a week, three hours per session for the full 14-week semester.

In the second term, students enroll in Landscape K4404 Landscape Design Studio I, which meets twice a week, three hours per session for the full 14-week semester; and Landscape K4102 Plant Materials I and Landscape K4112 Landscape Technology: Site Grading and Drainage. K4102 and K4112 meet once a week, each for 7-week modules, run consecutively.

In the third term, students enroll in Landscape K4405 Landscape Design Studio II, which meets twice a week, three hours per session for the full 14-week semester; and Landscape K4103 Plant Materials II and Landscape K4113 Landscape Technology: Construction and Site Details. K4102 and K4112 meet once a week, each for 7-week modules, run consecutively.

In the fourth term, students enroll in Landscape K4406 Landscape Design Studio III, which meets twice a week, three hours per session for the full 14-week semester; and Landscape K4215 Internship. The Internship is loosely structured to allow students to benefit from working in a professional setting, whether in a firm or on an independent design project. The minimum Internship commitment is 80 hours. During the fourth term students may enroll in AutoCAD and Digital Representation, which are offered free of charge and carry no credit units.

In the fifth term, students enroll in Landscape K4407 Landscape Design Studio IV, which meets twice a week, three hours per session and Land K4220 Advanced Planting Design, which meets once a week, three hours per session. Both classes meet for the full 14-week semester.

Please note:

Plant Material courses, K4102 and K4103, meet on Saturdays during the Fall and Spring semesters.

Summer semester course lengths are adjusted to the 12-week summer semester schedule.
