Day Trips in New York

To practice their language and ethnographic research skills, students will take half-day field trips to Arab neighborhoods and other sites around New York City, supervised by guest lecturers and resident advisers.

Traveling to and from King's Academy in Jordan

Students must have a valid passport and are advised to apply for their passports well in advance of their scheduled departure.

The program includes roundtrip travel between Columbia University in New York and Manja, Jordan. Students are accompanied by the instructors and resident advisers.

Field Trips in Jordan

With King's Academy as its base, the program includes visits to:

•    Camp for two nights with our Bedouin hosts in the desert, while visiting
      o    The spectacular city of Petra
      o    Wadi Rum, a protected area covering 720 square kilometers of                     dramatic desert wilderness
      o    Experience a traditional Arabic bath
•    Mt. Nebo, where Moses is said to have looked out over the Promised            Land
•    Kerak, the twelfth-century Crusader stronghold
•    The fourth- and sixth-century Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics in            Madaba
•    Modern art museums Dar al-Anda and Darat al Funun, and the Jordan          National Gallery of Fine Arts
•    The Wild Jordan Nature Center, dedicated to promoting ecological  and    sustainable development
•    The blue-domed King Abdullah Mosque
•    Amman’s Citadel and Gold Souq
•    Jerash, one of the largest and best-preserved sites of Roman     architecture outside Italy
 


Wadi Rum

The program also includes meetings with representatives from political and international organizations in Jordan. Students participate in art and music festivals and explore many vibrant neighborhoods and towns to see how daily life is lived in the Middle East.
