How does this program differ from other programs in Construction Management?
Typically, construction management programs are geared toward those with engineering backgrounds and often include courses for which engineering concepts and knowledge are prerequisite. Our program is specifically designed for those working in construction and related industries whose education and experience is less specific.
My undergraduate degree is in English, but I have been helping out with my family’s construction company since graduation. Should I apply for this program?
Yes, especially if your responsibilities include management and you plan to continue working in your family’s company. This program will provide a broad based foundation in all the important areas of the construction process, from design through build.
I have not taken math in a long time. How much calculus or other math do I need to know?
Advanced knowledge of mathematics is neither assumed nor required.
What kind of jobs can I hope to get upon completing this program?
The program is designed largely for people with some experience in construction or related industries who want to sharpen their understanding of its many components and requirements in order to improve current job performance and/or advance into higher levels of management. Graduates will be well positioned to advance in their current occupation as well as to pursue opportunities elsewhere. A number of companies have already expressed interest in recruiting our graduates three years before we will graduate our first class.
Can I spread my program of study out over a longer period of time?
The program is designed to be completed within a designated amount of time. Candidates for the degree are expected to make a serious commitment of time and energy to the program and are required to complete their course of study in six consecutive semesters, excluding summer, over three years. That said, students may take a maximum of five consecutive years to complete the program if necessary for business or personal reasons.
Do I have to take the required courses in a particular sequence?
Students must complete CNAD K4105. Elemental Topics in Construction Administration and CNAD K4106. Foundations of Building Construction during their first two semesters of study. Students with requisite experience who wish to opt out of CNAD K4105 may do so pending the results of a special examination. Beginning with the spring 2010 semester, the Masters Project (K4501) must be taken during the spring semester of either the second or third year. Other than that, courses may be taken in any sequence subject to availability. It is recommended that the core be completed before enrolling in any electives.
I have many years of experience in technology, but I never completed an undergraduate degree. Is there any way I can be admitted to the program?
No. A U.S. bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a non-U.S. educational institution is required in addition to a minimum of three to five years of relevant experience.
