Frequently Asked Questions

What programs are available through the ALP?

Throughout the year, the ALP offers full-time intensive English programs, part-time programs, as well as special English programs. Some of the specific programs offered include: English for Professional Purposes, Fluency and Listening, and College Composition for International Students. Please visit Programs Available for a complete list.

How old must I be to apply?

Students must be at least 17 years of age in order to be admitted into the ALP.

How much does the program cost?

Tuition costs vary by course. For a full list of the estimated costs for each program, please visit the Dates and Prices page.

How do I apply?

You may fill out a paper or online application, although the online application is greatly preferred. The application fee is payable by credit card, check, or money order drawn from a U.S. bank. No application will be processed without the application fee.

If you are currently outside of the United States and need a student visa, you will need to submit a bank statement (dated within the last 3 months), a sponsor letter (if your tuition and living funds are being provided by a third party), and a photocopy of your passport.

For specific application requirements for each ALP program, visit the Apply to a Program page.

How do I know which course is appropriate for me?

Each ALP student must take the English Placement Test (EPT) to determine which level course best suits your needs. You must apply online before you can take the EPT. You will only receive information on taking the EPT after you have submitted an application. For more information about the English Placement Test, visit the English Language Testing page.

May I stay in University housing?

ALP students may choose from a number of housing options depending on the time of year. Columbia University campus housing is limited, and students are encouraged to apply early. ALP students must be 18 years or older to live in campus residences. For more information on the various housing options, please visit Housing, Dining, and Health page.
