English for Professional Purposes: Business
Available in summer.
An intensive three-week English for Business program that begins in late July.
Classes balance business content with language study. Students study with a select group of 18-20 advanced English students, receiving detailed instruction and individualized feedback on presentation, writing, and management skills.
Course curriculum includes:
- Case studies from such companies as Merrill Lynch, Starbucks, and Procter and Gamble.
- Current business trends--globalization, employment in the new economy, and doing business in risky areas.
- Private tours of New York financial institutions such as the New York Stock Exchange, the Federal Reserve Bank, and other Wall Street landmarks.
- Up-to-date print, audio, and video materials.
- Assignments requiring library and field research, teamwork, and business writing: case analyses, proposals, reports.
- Language skills, vocabulary, and grammatical structures useful for business.
The program provides opportunity for students to meet and socialize with future business school colleagues and other international business people from different areas of the world, enjoying New York cultural and entertainment offerings during out-of-class hours. Students discuss issues with executives at business institutions and organizations, and work with highly experienced instructors who publish and present in this field.
Students in the program have access to Columbia University facilities, including the Business School library, language laboratory, computers, and the gym (additional fee required).
Students must have a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (PBT), or 213 (CBT), or 80 (iBT), or ALP placement at Level 8 for admission to this program.
Students should already hold a university degree.
