English Language Testing
The American Language Program provides instruction in ten levels of English proficiency. ALP Level 1 corresponds to absolute beginner ability, whereas Level 10 signifies near-native proficiency of an educated language user.
Students' language levels are determined initially by their scores on either the English Placement Test (EPT) or the English Certification Test (ECT).
The English Placement Test is taken by students who are planning to enroll in full- or part-time study at the American Language Program only, and who are not enrolled in or planning to enroll in a degree program at Columbia University.
The English Certification Test is taken by students who are enrolled in or planning to enroll in a degree program at Columbia University.
